August's month is walking directly in July's shoes as many festivals are held throughout the country, evenings are colorful, and a festive atmosphere is spreading in the crowded streets.

August is mostly known in Japan for the O'Bon holiday period where Japanese families gather to honor the memory of their ancestors (you can read more details about this in our dedicated blog post).

Despite the exciting mood of August, heat stroke awaits as it is the hottest month of the year, and humidity levels are making the practice very difficult. As practitioners, we have to be careful and take care of each other!

O'Bon 2023

Most of Seido's Craftsmen and workshops will take a few days off from August 11th to August 16th, so all custom-made orders will be delayed accordingly.

O'Bon 2023

In Japan, the O'Bon festival is a yearly celebration that takes place during the summer. It combines Japanese tradition and Buddhist beliefs to honor the ancestral spirits. Over time, O'bon evolved into a family gathering holiday as the spirits of the deceased are believed to revisit the household altar every year at that time. On that occasion, family members meet to pay tribute to their ancestors by visiting and cleaning their graves. But O'bon with its traditional dance called "Bon Odori" is also a time of merriment and joy.

Like every year, August 11th (Fri) is Mountain Day, a national holiday in Japan, which marks the beginning of some holidays for many Japanese, our craftsmen included. So, until August 16th (Wed), the majority of workshops will be closed, production time extended and we will not be able to provide quotations for custom-made items.
All custom-made orders placed before and during this period will be delayed by about a week, but fear not, this will be automatically taken into account in the estimation of the shipping dates displayed on all products, as well as in your cart.

Here we are in July, and as summer sets in, the increasing heat is making it challenging to keep up with training. But we will do our best to practice to the fullest. The summer season also brings with it summer seminars, where Budo enthusiasts gather to train together and expand their skills all over the globe.

Despite the thick humidity, July is a special time in Japan when people gather to enjoy Matsuri (festivals). Hana-bi (Fireworks) will illuminate the night sky, the streets will get crowded by passersby, and children will excitedly line up to order Kakigōri (shaved ice dessert) while everyone will enjoy the warmth of summer's evening.

Speaking of Festival, one of the highlights of the month is the Tanabata festival, held on the Evening of the seventh day.
Also known as the "Star Festival" ("Hoshimatsuri"/"星祭り"), it celebrates the only day of the year when the two Deities "Orihime" and "Hikoboshi" are allowed to meet, as they are separated by the Milky Way the rest of the year. Our regular customers will have noticed that the kanji of "Star" is the one present in our name, "星道".

We are already in the second half of June! Despite the pleasant weather of May, the old Japanese calendar refers to June as "the month of water" for a reason! The rainy season has begun, and with it, humidity levels and typhoon frequency are increasing. Despite these challenges, we are determined to continue to train and sweat on the mats.

June is also the season of fireflies! These delicate creatures light up the night sky, and we are fortunate to witness their graceful ballet of light as they fly above us. And if we are lucky enough, we can also contemplate the Terrace rice fields which are now filled with water, creating beautiful views that reflect the colorful sunset sky.

May is finally here! And as you know, this is the beginning of one of our favorite periods of the year here at Seido.
Japanese families have just celebrated the "Golden Week", a one-week holiday where relatives gather together and people travel all around the country.
Koinobori (carp-shaped windsocks) are hung everywhere to celebrate Children's Day (on the last day of the Golden Week), ravishing the eyes with multicolor scenery. As a symbol of power and energy, they are invigorating our spirits and give us a courageous mindset.
In the north of Japan, there are still some late-blooming cherry blossoms, as here in Tokyo we are already enjoying the beautiful purple, pink, and white hues of the Wisteria.

Finally (and mostly), the weather is getting warmer and sunnier, which means it's a great time to head to the Dojo and practice martial arts. The Dojo can get pretty crowded, but it's always exciting to see practitioners from all around the world, with different backgrounds and cultures, coming together to learn and grow.

Golden Week 2023

Seido will be closed from May 3rd to May 5th. Our website stays operational and accepts orders, but no shipping will occur during this period.

Golden Week 2023

In Japan, April 29th (Showa Day), May 3rd (Constitution Memorial Day), May 4th (Greenery Day), and May 5th (Children's Day) are national holidays.

All suppliers, carriers and partners will be closed or will maintain only limited services during the entire week.
In order to avoid hundreds of orders piling up for Monday 8th, we will be working on May 1st, and 2nd.

Please also note that orders containing products that are order-made or out of stock might suffer a delay of about 2 weeks if their production/preparation time includes the Golden Week. This delay is taken into account by our system, and the date indicated at checkout stays accurate.

As usual, our team will continue to answer emails at a slower pace and our website will stay fully operational.

As you know, April is a special month in Japan, it's usually the peak of the beautiful season of Cherry Blossoms, and the Japanese gather together to enjoy petals flowing in the breeze. April is also the beginning of the school year here in Japan, and after 2 to 3 weeks off for students, it's time to go back to the dojo!

To go along with the arrival of spring, and with the new season in mind, we decided to offer 10% OFF a product selection.
